| Alternative medicine is the oldest branch of medicine which consists of nowadays complementary therapies with herbs and traditional methods. Traditionally, public health relies extensively on conventional medicine in its mission to prevent and treat disease. Most common methods are: acupuncture, herbal therapy, massage therapy, Homeopathy, Naturopathic medicine, and Prayer and spirituality. Parallel to its popularity, alternative medicine education is gaining importance with holistic medicine schools, alternative medicine schools and alternetive medicine programs. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) ' definition, health is "a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Today there is a sharp increase in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), defined as modalities (e.g., acupuncture, herbal therapy, massage therapy), employed in place of, or as adjuncts to, conventional medical therapies. Studies showing that half of the U.S. population turns to such modalities (acupuncture, herbal therapy, massage therapy), with acceptance and the use of alternative medicine methods expanding during the 1990s. |
